Family Friendly Carnival in Puerto Lopez, Ecuador
I’m a huge festival fan. I love to dance and dance all night long. –Douglas Booth Laughing children, water guns, espuma and full beaches are sure signs that it is Carnival in Ecuador. During this pre-Lent festival running Friday evening through Tuesday, many families flock to beach towns to swim, hang out on the sand and relax. Puerto Lopez beach’s busiest day of the year is Monday of Carnival. If you are picturing Carnival in Brazil with huge costumes and parades, it is not quite the same. The Ecuador festival is very family friendly and less flamboyant than its Brazilian counterpart. Puerto Lopez beach on the busiest day of the…

39,000 Volunteers Clean Ecuador Beaches, Rivers, and Ocean Floors
“Think globally, act locally.” — Origins of the phrase are disputed according to Wikipedia Ecuador Environmental Protection In 2008, Ecuador became the first country in the world to provide constitutional protection for the environment. This does not mean that garbage is always deposited in a receptacle nor that all packaging is biodegradable. What it does mean, among many other things, is that students learn about the negative impact plastic in oceans and rivers have on the planet. Rings on beverage cans can kill marine life. From Manabi Province Environment Ministry Tweet Since 2010, Ecuador’s Environment Ministry has been leading a September cleanup as part of International Beach Cleaning Day, promoted…

Puerto Lopez Boat Maintenance
Spring tides result in high waters that are higher than average, low waters that are lower than average, ‘slack water’ time that is shorter than average, and stronger tidal currents than average. — Wikipedia Disclaimer I am not a boater nor do play one on TV. My father lives on a boat in California’s San Francisco Bay. When I lived there, he wanted to teach me boating but I was never interested in more than riding along. To any boaters reading this, please bear with me as I may use terms incorrectly. Perhaps you will get a nice laugh while you read how a layperson writes about boats. Puerto…

Tide Pools in Puerto Lopez #AtoZChallenge
“Despite the sea being wild and the waves rolling away from the shore, the tide always returns.” ― Katherine McIntyre, By the Sea The Puerto Lopez tide pools are a popular family weekend destination. Kids can swim in the ocean without worrying about being swept out to sea. Puerto Lopez, Manabí, Ecuador (Click on photo to increase size) During low tide, the pools are naturally protected from waves by large rocks and a curved southern shore. Puerto Lopez, Manabí, Ecuador Crystal clear water warms while the tide is out. Tiny fish enjoy a temporary reprieve from larger prey. Puerto Lopez, Manabí, Ecuador As the tide starts coming in, everyone packs…

Sunsets near the equator #AtoZChallenge
“Are you dreaming? Stop dreaming; come and watch the sunset, it is better than all the dreams!” — Mehmet Murat ildan Sunsets near the equator come and go quickly. A few minutes after the sun begins coloring the ocean and sky, it has set. Dusk lasts a few moments, then it is dark. November 9 The sun sets almost perpendicular to the horizon instead of diagonally as seen closer to the north and south poles. The further north or south you go from the equator, the longer a sunset will last. March 12 The north and south movement of the sun throughout the year is quite evident near the equator.…

Reinventing a 2.4 km beach front boardwalk #AtoZChallenge
I want to run the beach’s length, because it never ends. –Deborah Ager Ecuador recently reinvented the Puerto Lopez malecon (beach front boardwalk). From beginning to end, construction covered a two year period. The 2.4 km malecon is completely upgraded and unrecognizable from it’s former self. New malecon from Victor Hugo Hotel April 2017 What was wrong with the old Puerto Lopez malecon? A deteriorating road, crumbling sidewalk, and no public restrooms made up the old malecon. Two rivers had to be waded through during the rainy season to walk across them. During the dry season when no water flowed, we all drove through their dry bed to reach the…
