Zapatos in Puerto Lopez, Ecuador #AtoZChallenge

    April 30, 2018 /

Puerto Lopez is hard on zapatos (shoes). As I explained in Mototaxis, walking is the most popular way to get around town. Paved streets bake in the sun, in turn wearing down shoe soles. When it rains, dirt roads turn to sticky mud, threatening to become one with your footwear.   Puerto Lopez shoe repair     When your shoes are falling apart, you buy new shoes or repair the ones you own. The Zapateria above has repaired my ten year old Teva sandals twice. I wear them nearly every day so they are well worn but still going because of Zapateria repairs. I am wearing them in the…

Tiendas – Puerto Lopez, Ecuador’s neighborhood stores #AtoZChallenge

    April 23, 2018 /

Neighborhood tiendas (stores) are part of the fabric of Puerto Lopez, Ecuador. They supplement larger grocery stores by stocking single rolls of toilet paper, small containers of milk, yogurt, ice cream, cooking oils, sugar, and other daily essentials. Tiendas have daily necessities Let’s say you are seven years old and helping your siblings fix a bike in front of your home. Your mom is making dinner and realizes she is out of milk. She calls to you, hands you money and sends you to get milk.   Tienda door visible on far left   Two tiendas are about a minute from your house, one in each direction. The tienda uphill…

Palo Santo products made in Puerto Lopez, Ecuador #AtoZChallenge

    April 18, 2018 /

For centuries, Palo Santo has been used for it’s healing and cleansing properties. The tree grows in coastal areas of South America, is in the citrus family, and smells of pine, mint and lemon. It is a relative of Frankincense, Myrrh and Copal. Palo Santo translates to “Holy Wood” or “Sacred Wood” in English. Dante Bolcato (top photo, lower left) makes products sold on his website, El Artesan, in Puerto Lopez. While walking along the malecon, you can find his store by following your nose – there is always Palo Santo wood smoking on the front sidewalk. In fact, in the evenings, you will smell Palo Santo smoking in many Puerto Lopez…

Javico, A Puerto Lopez Grocery Store #AtoZChallenge

    April 11, 2018 /

You will find several grocery stores in Puerto Lopez. Family owned and run Comercial Javico is one of the two largest. The store is on the main through street, the only stoplight is a few steps away. If you click here to view it on Google Maps, you can see Javico is right in the middle of Puerto Lopez. Alberto, in the above photo, seems to work every day and always with a smile and kind word.   Javico sells to the public and to small businesses, who in turn sell the products in their neighborhood stores or use them in their restaurants.   Bulk foods are carefully weighed and packaged…

Cuenca’s Seven Acre Market – Feria Libre

    May 29, 2017 /

“Wherever possible, I like to use home-grown or locally produced ingredients.” — Mary Berry Cuenca is a UNESCO World Heritage Trust Site known for its beautiful historic buildings. Ecuador’s third largest city, Cuenca is 2500 meters (8200 feet) high in the Andes mountains. With tourists focused on architecture, it is easy for them to miss what could be a highlight of their trip. In my opinion, the Feria Libre seven acre market is a must see. People travel from miles around to buy and sell goods. It even has it’s own bus terminal! Buyers know this is where they will find the lowest prices. Entrepreneurs rent space knowing good products will…

    Vegetable Ivory – Tagua #AtoZChallenge

    April 26, 2017 /

Thinking in generations also means enabling our young to have a decent standard of living.  — Paul Tsongas   Tagua, sometimes called vegetable ivory for it’s resemblance to elephant ivory, is a nut from the Tagua palm tree. The hard white inner nut can be carved and polished like ivory. Artists carve it into jewelry, figurines, and many other products. My friend Marianne Fry in Puerto Lopez has been designing and exporting hand-carved Tagua products for 18 years through her company, Feel Good Exports. Each piece is hand crafted by artisans living in remote areas. These products afford families an opportunity to make a decent life for themselves who could…
